Homemade Vegan Advocaat
I hardly drank any creamy liqueurs before I went vegan, so I didn't miss them really. To be honest, I shudder to think of the very idea of making a drink like advocaat from alcohol, egg yolk, and sugar but you guys requested a recipe for vegan advocaat quite often and fortunately, we don't have to add any egg yolk to the mix. Instead, we replaced it with vegan vanilla pudding which suits my taste much more. Plus, you can customize this vegan advocaat to your liking, whether it's about sweetness, alcohol content, color, or consistency.
For vegan vanilla pudding it's best to use nut or soy milk. When you use rice or oat milk, vegan pudding often doesn't become solid, which is (among other things) due to the enzymes in plant-based milk. If you want to prepare this advocaat alcohol-free, replace the alcohol with even more plant-based milk or water. You can also buy alcohol-free rum and vodka.
You can actually already find a few vegan alternatives for advocaat in supermarkets, especially around Easter time, but unfortunately, these products aren't available everywhere yet. So util then, we just have to do it ourselves. And if plain vegan advocaat isn't enough for you, we can only recommend you to bake our vegan advocaat cake with hazelnut base or these Easter tartelettes filled with vegan advocaat. Cheers!
Homemade Vegan Advocaat
Ingredients
- 37 g (1.33 oz) vanilla custard powder
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 500 ml (2 cups) plant-based milk
- 1 vanilla bean
- 100 ml (0.5 cup) rum or vodka
- 100 ml (0.5 cup) vegan cooking cream
- 1 pinch of kala namak
- 1 pinch of turmeric (optional)
Instructions
Prepare custard powder according to package instructions. Usually, you mix custard powder with sugar, then gradually add some plant-based milk until the mixture is smooth. Bring remaining plant-based milk to a boil while stirring, then add the mixed powder. Let the pudding simmer for approx. 1 minute while constantly stirring. Remove from heat and let cool down.
Halve a vanilla pod lengthwise and scrape out the vanilla pulp with the back of a knife.
Add vanilla pulp, rum or vodka, vegan cooking cream, and kala namak to the pudding and stir to combine. If desired, add some turmeric to get a more intense yellow color. Season vegan advocaat to taste and refrigerate for at least one hour.
