Vegan Ham and Cheese Pretzel Sticks
There are recipes that feel TOO simple to really call them a „recipe.” Maybe that’s why we hesitated for a while about whether these vegan ham and cheese pretzel sticks really belonged on our blog. But then we made an Instagram reel about them. You were SO happy about the pretzel sticks, have already baked many of them and wondered (just like us) why we didn’t all come up with the idea of veganizing this snack from our childhood earlier.
Since we made pretzel sticks for the first time, they have become part of our office routine, and we baked them almost once a week. In some cases, requests to work from home office were canceled when it became clear that we’d make pretzel sticks again on Tuesday.
So what makes them so irresistibly delicious? Firstly, it’s the super simple preparation, of course. All you need is frozen pretzel sticks – and yes, surprisingly, most of them are vegan. They are first defrosted to make them softer and then flattened in order to have plenty of room for vegan bacon and shredded cheese on top. This combination, on top of warm pretzel sticks from the oven, is unbeatable.
Two camps have now formed in our office: Camp 1 loves the pretzel sticks as they are. Camp 2 prefers to spread vegan sour cream on the sticks beforehand, which adds a little tartness and creaminess but also keeps the dough softer – do as you prefer. Instead of vegan sour cream, you could also use cream cheese or another spread.
And if you can’t find vegan bacon cubes, you can also finely dice smoked tofu and fry them briefly beforehand if you wish. However, we always recommend adding a small dash of vegetable oil to vegan shredded cheese. This will ensure that the „cheese” really melts.
Vegan Ham and Cheese Pretzel Sticks
Ingredients
- 8 frozen pretzel sticks
- 250 g (9 oz) plant-based shredded cheese
- 1 tbsp neutral vegetable oil
- 100 g (3.5 oz) vegan bacon cubes (or smoked tofu)
- plant-based sour cream (optional)
- chives for serving (optional)
Instructions
Spread the frozen pretzel sticks on one or two lined baking trays and leave to defrost until they are slightly softer. Then press the pretzel sticks much flatter by hand and therefore wider.
Preheat the oven to 200 °C / 390 °F (convection heat). If desired, spread a layer of vegan sour cream on the flattened sticks, then top with vegan bacon cubes. Mix the vegan shredded cheese with some vegetable oil and sprinkle generously over the vegan bacon.
Bake in the oven at 200 °C / 390 °F (convection heat) for approximately 15 minutes or until the vegan cheese has melted and the pretzel sticks are baked through. For serving, sprinkle with finely chopped chives, if desired.
